Audio Cassettes: Nostalgia Keeps Them Alive
In the eighties and early nineties audiocassette was prevailing popular audio recording media and one of the biggest steps in the lives of any young child was what their first audiocassette was. However, if the same question is asked to the current younger generations the answer most likely will be CD or MP3. Very few of us will remember the days of audiocassette.
The audio cassette paved the way for a completely new kind of musical experience, in which music was truly portable for the first time. Now you could take music with you to your car, to your workplace, and even while walking around. The kind of damage that could occur to a vinyl record- scratches and breakage- were no longer a concern with audio cassettes.
This doesn't mean that cassette tapes were a perfect technology. The ribbon inside was delicate and easily twisted or broken, and once that happens there was no way to repair the tape. Audio cassettes are not as fragile as the previous generation of music on vinyl discs, but the CD had advantages that would push cassettes out of the market.
Many of us have wonderful memories of audio cassettes that we used to listen to long ago. Everyone that ever had tapes, always had one or two favorites. Ones they would listen to over and over. Special tapes that they or a friend had made. Tapes that you knew by heart. Audio tapes were a wonderful way to take your favorite music with you and share it with others.
It was an interesting time when audio cassettes and CDs lived together. While CDs were more expensive, they easily became worth the cost for the function. CDs could be shuffled through to select a certain song. You could also repeat just one song or an entire album! The choices were endless. That would be the end of the cassette tape.
Whatever advances are made in technology in years to come, we will still remember the humble audio cassette. It did play a major role in the development of future technology and artistic technique, and many of them are still around and playable. The audio cassette will never again dominate the market, but thousands of us still love it and remember it fondly.
Popular audio recording media in the eighties/early nineties was audio cassettes. This facilitated a new kind of musical experience, wherein one can take music to your car/workplace/walk without getting damaged. Audiocassette has improved the handling capability but still the tape gets twisted/tangled with loss of favorite music. Discussions with friends indicate that TDK audio cassette was used for recording lullabies for child, mix tapes etc. The cassettes and CDs have coexisted. The CDs are expensive but has better functionality and random access wherein one can select a particular song and hence has displaced the tapes. Cassette tapes, a milestone in audio Technology development will be remembered fondly.
